Dress Code Drama

Jessica Bauer

In the past two years, yoga pants have been a popular trend at GS, but recent dress code changes might end this.

Certain restrictions on this year's dress code were made on frayed shorts, yoga pants and muscle shirts. Mixed feelings about these new restrictions were made by some students.

Field Hockey Cut Loose

Donald Chedrick

Field hockey has been eliminated as a school sport, but this hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a return in the future.
For six years, field hockey was a WPIAL sport at GS and before that it was a club sport. It was just difficult finding other teams in this area to compete.

Mentor Program Improvements: Are they enough?

Amanda Riehl

Surviving high school can be difficult; that’s an understatement – and almost every freshman, even before entering high school, knows this.
To help them adjust to a new school, GS has a mentor program in place, where freshmen are paired up with seniors.

New Guidelines for School Lunches

Cassandra Brennan

Whole wheat is taking over in the school cafeteria, something that students are particularly not happy with. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Act has finally been implemented in schools across the United States and GS isn’t an exception.
“There is no tastefulness to the lunches,” senior Asheley Buchwalter, a new student to GS, said. “I won’t even buy things some days.”

Smartphones in the Classroom

Cody Craig

It seems like people can’t walk down the street without seeing someone with a smartphone or tablet in their hand.  In the near future, there may be students walking down the hallway with them as well.
While most students are welcoming the acceptance of these devices, some teachers are a bit hesitant.

Speaking a Whole New Language

Jaydyn Morrison

Communication is the key to understanding and speaking a different language helps people to achieve this.
In GS foreign language classes, students are in an environment in which the foreign language is the only type of speaking permitted.  This program is called simulated immersion and it was created by Mr. and Mrs. Kevin and Tammy Lyons 12 years ago.

Traveling Around the World...for School?

Heather Dougherty

Although GS gets a number of new students every year as freshmen come up and students transfer, two special new additions from Yemen and Poland have also joined the school.
Ahmed Abdo from Yemen and Marta Hempowicz from Poland are GS’ new foreign exchange students.  Abdo landed on U.S. soil August 23rd and Hempowicz on the 27th where they then joined their host parents who live in the district. They both will be staying in the country for 10 months until the school year is over.  Although they have not been here for very long at all, Abdo has already gained a positive opinion of the country.
