Being the new kid is never easy, but being from a rival school can be even harder.  As for sophomore Katie Corsaro, the transition from Hempfield to GS has turned out to be trouble free.
“I thought it was going to be hard being new and getting accepted,” Corsaro said. “But it wasn’t that hard.”
Corsaro originally attended Hempfield, but moved to GS at the beginning of this school year.  Even though the two schools share a rivalry, it didn’t impact Corsaro’s move.  The fact that she was starting at a new school made Corsaro understandably anxious.
“I was pretty nervous,” Corsaro said. “I was trying to find out where I was going and meeting new people, but everybody was very welcoming.”
A fresh start can be very welcoming to most people.  The chance to simply start anew with a clean slate is a once in a lifetime thing.  But the first couple of weeks at a new school can be very nerve wracking.  For Corsaro, though, this wasn’t a problem.
“I don’t think [people judged too quickly],” Corsaro said. “I hope not, at least.”
Unfortunately, Corsaro had to leave her friends behind when she moved to GS.  Because of this, she was forced to meet new people and make new friends.  This can be a big challenge for some people.
“The worst part was leaving my friends behind and adjusting to a new town,” Corsaro said. “But it did give a fresh start and I felt like I could just start over.”
Katie may have made new friends, but she still misses her old ones.
“Yes, I miss my friends and teachers,” Corsaro said. “But I still keep in touch with them.”
Even though Corsaro misses life at Hempfield, she doesn’t have any complaints about GS.  In fact, she finds the two schools, despite being rivals, very similar.
“It wasn’t a big change,” Corsaro said. “But Hempfield does have more classes and books and stuff like that.”
Hempfield is a larger school than GS, but Corsaro prefers a smaller school.
“A smaller school is better,” Corsaro said. “There’s less people so the halls are less crowded.”
Overall though, Corsaro is happy with GS.  While she misses Hempfield, she has found happiness here at GS.
“I really like the block schedule,” Corsaro said. “The teachers are really nice and the students are welcoming.”
Now that Corsaro has been at GS for a few months, things are back to normal for her.  She keeps in touch with her old friends while making new ones.  Coming into a new school, Corsaro thought it would be a hard change, but now she realizes her fears were for nothing.  She doesn’t even feel like a new kid anymore.
“[It lasted] for about a week or two,” Corsaro said. “But it’s normal now.”
