Two words, thirteen letters and one very big meaning. The Senior Project is one of the most important requirements in order for graduation.
The deadline for the Senior Project proposal is November 30, but some students are still confused on what they’ll focus their project on.
“I don’t know what to do mine on yet,” senior Nola Ries said. “Maybe something with science, but I’m not entirely sure.”
Though the deadline for the proposal is nearing, some students even have their projects almost completed.
“I did my senior project mostly over the summer,” senior Abigail Cawoski said. “I just have my presentation to do and a couple of other things.”
The Senior Project binders are given to juniors at the end of the year and students can choose to start it over the summer.
“I think the hardest part for the students is to figure out what they want to do their Senior Project [on],” Mrs. Marla Nelson coordinator of the Senior Project, said. “The struggle mainly is to get that proposal completed and approved. After that it becomes a lot easier.”
The project can be time consuming throughout the months and some students think that the project should not be required.
“It can take up a lot of time,” Ries said. “[In] the time we take doing this, we could be looking up colleges or doing school work. But if people do take it seriously it is extremely helpful.”
Though the Senior Project can be taken in many ways, one thing is for sure, the project prepares students for different types of obstacles in life such as deadlines.
“Students have been writing research papers their whole high school career,” Mrs. Nelson said. “This is something completely new.”
The Senior Project and Senior Paper are both extremely important but have two completely different meanings.
“I feel that the Senior Project is much more complex,” Cawoski said. “I feel that we have more to choose from in our Senior Project and it’s more hands on.”
With the proposal being due in late November, seniors still have time to complete the actual project until early May.
“I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that my Senior Project is done,” Ries said. “I just need to find time to fit it in between having school and my job.”
The Senior Project should have an equal amount of time and effort.
“Don’t procrastinate your Senior Project, but don’t try to cram it all together either,” Nelson said. “In order for this to be effective, projects should be done over time. The more effort you apply to this, the more you learn.”
